"Wood" You Look At That - Building Eye-Popping, Custom Wooden Golf Scoreboards

A local country club here in Massachusetts approached me to come up with a solution to one of their glaring problems.
In his continuing effort to enhance day-to-day operations and member experiences, the head PGA pro at one of Massachusetts best private country clubs wanted to overhaul their scoreboards for events. The old scoreboards they had in place were starting to rot and looked like they had gone through the ringer on several occassions.
As we talked about his needs, the current problems, and the look he wanted, we came up with a gameplan on a design. They were to be elegant, durable, and have the country club's logo centered on each panel. With club events ranging in size from 100+ to as little as 25, he needed a dynamic solution that would allow him and his staff to scale the scoreboard to the event participation.
The solution - A series of 6 panels that can be mixed and matched to expand or contract in size based on event needs. Each panel would have shaker style framing of solid maple wood to provide stability to the panel material.
It all sounded great in theory, and even during the design stage and mock-ups I ran into very few issues. It wasn't until I got into the full-sized build that issues started to arise - largely due to space and tool constraints. The mock-ups at 1:6 scale posed no issues for my router table, table saw, jointer and planer. Once I scaled the materials up to the 72 X 23.5 panels I had to get creative. ADHD Superpowers engaged - workarounds and solutions came quickly and we were able to get the framing done despite some limitations on the jointer table.
Once the build was complete the decision on protective coating was pretty simple; a need for a durable, UV-resistant, finish led me to an outdoor spar urethane. Several coats later, the boards were ready for delivery!
Live the custom life!
